If you’re planning a London wedding at the Crypt on the Green in Clerkenwell, you’ll find lots of inspiration from this gorgeous celebration!
Siobhan and Guy got married at Crypt on the Green, which is an historic venue nestled in the centre of well connected Clerkenwell, London with an awesome urban vibe.
THE CEREMONY
I spent some time with Siobhan and her bridesmaids at the couples home in south London as they got ready on the morning of the wedding. As I normally do, I spent a bit of time photographing the bride’s wedding gown, shoes (gorgeous Jimmy Choo’s!) and her stunning bridal bouquet by the amazing Contemporary Florists, Sage Flowers. Siobhan’s wedding flowers were definitely some of my favourites from all my 2019 weddings that I captured! Before long, it was time to hop into a black cab to make our way to the wedding ceremony location. Siobhan even made her way there in a white taxi – in true London wedding style!
The ceremony was a church service in a beautiful, and very old church on a private road on the edge of Clerkenwell, close to Holborn Circus and Hatton Garden. The area is filled with lots of offices and commuters much of the time, and was bustling even on a Saturday in this popular area. Siobhan and Guy had chosen to wed at St Etheldreda’s Church, right in the heart of the city. There was a nice personal connection as it wasn’t far from where the couple worked, which was also where they met! The church itself, like so much of the city of London and the area of Clerkenwell in particular, is full to the brim with history, and is actually the oldest Catholic Church in England. The space is stunning from a photographic perspective, with intricate and beautiful stained glass windows, and gorgeous light flooding in from the crypt area as you enter. It really is a special and historic place.
During the ceremony they had several beautiful readings from friends and family, and the couple just radiated happiness as they exchanged their wedding vows and wedding rings.
Once the ceremony was finished and the couple were officially married, we spent a bit of time taking some photos in the street. Thankfully it was a nice, quiet private road, so there was no traffic to be concerned about! The couple had made some maps to help their family and friends navigate their way to the reception, and some chose to take a taxi ride to the venue. However, as the weather was good, the couple decided to take a stroll through the streets of London to make their way to the ceremony, which made for some fantastic photos through the area of Clerkenwell and the lovely buildings in the area.
WHY CRYPT ON THE GREEN IS A GREAT PLACE TO CELEBRATE YOUR WEDDING

Before Siobhan and Guy made their way into the Crypt on the Green to begin their wedding day celebrations, we briefly stopped outside in the grounds of the venue for a few quick portraits. At the time, Clerkenwell Design Week was taking place, which adds splashes of colour to the streets of the area, showcasing designers, architects and other creative businesses for events in the area. For Siobhan and Guy’s wedding, it provided some gorgeous colourful backdrops as part of the church.
Crypt on the Green is perfect for couples who want a chilled out DIY wedding, with plenty of versatile options. This amazing dry hire venue allows you so much flexibility to create your perfect wedding day. The vaulted ceilings, parquet floors and original features from the 1700’s really make this venue a one-of-a-kind location for a fantastic wedding. It’s one of the coolest places to get married in Clerkenwell. The venue offers an amazing atmosphere for a wedding, and they also host away days, product launches, exhibitions and galas.
From a wedding photography perspective, there are loads of incredible backdrops that are perfect for photos. Despite being underground (well, it is a crypt!) there are in fact eight large windows, providing some lovely natural light that pours in from the streets of London outside. The Long Walk outside in the grounds is the perfect spot for photos, and also for a drinks reception if the weather is fine.
THE RECEPTION
After arriving back at the venue, it was time for mingling and drinks. The couple had booked a steel band to play whilst guests enjoyed drinks and canapés in the afternoon, which was really quirky and even got some of the guests dancing early on in the day!
For their wedding breakfast, they had set out long banqueting tables which provided a fantastic atmosphere for their wedding breakfast. For dinner they had delicious sharing platters, and after some emotional and hilarious speeches from the bride, groom, father of the bride, best man and maid of honour, it was time for the couple to cut the cake and take to the dancefloor for their first dance. Then the party really got into full swing!!
THE COUPLE
Siobhan wore a classic white dress by Martina Liana which she bought from Angelica Bridal and Guy wore a three-piece suit from Lipman & Sons and they looked an absolute picture. It was such a pleasure and a privilege to be able to photograph this stunning wedding in the heart of Clerkenwell at such a quirky venue, for such a lovely couple.
‘Becky captured our day exactly as we had hoped for – and more! Her relaxed yet extremely organised approach meant that we have lots of beautiful group shots which didn’t cut too much time into our day, as well as some stunning natural shots of us walking through London from our church to wedding reception. Lots of our guests commented how great Becky is and how well she fit in unobtrusively to the reception. For us she was such a calming influence and we are so happy with our photos.’
